Re: Question about hotel deposit/charges at checkin... To better clarify. If you booked direct, you were charged a first night room charge to hold the room. Your card will, upon check-in, have a "hold" of somewhere between $100-150 or so (it varies by property) placed on your card and released when you check out.

(On a few occassions, I have had a hotel charge my card every day for the prior night's room rate, taxes, dining, etc. But it is far more common for the hotel to charge the entire amount upon check-out.) Unfortunately, they do not always release the hold when you check out, and if you have a relatively low credit limit, that can cause problems.

Sometimes you can save money by prepaying for all or part of a hotel stay at the time you book the room rather than paying when you arrive at the hotel or when you check out. Even if you're not charged for a room up front, a hotel can put a hold on your card that can lower your available credit limit on a credit card or limit access to your bank balance on a debit card until your stay is complete.

The hotel placed a hold for $66 of my $389.76 stay on my checking account, then removed it the day I checked out. At that point I expected it to go through but it never did. I called the hotel and they said the full amount would be charged May 12th (I called on May 2nd). Still nothing. Called my bank, they said there's no charge from them.

2. Early check-in fee. Banas says that some hotels will charge you extra if you check in before a certain time. If you arrive early, ask whether there is an early check-in fee.
