Jordanian women are highly educated, are free to travel without a male companion, and don’t have to cover their hair in public (any woman that does so, does it by choice). Women here enjoy much more freedom than women in neighboring Middle Eastern countries.

I am thinking about traveling to Jordan by myself. Is it safe for a woman to do so? I’m thinking of going to the main tourist sites, such as Aqaba, Wadi Rum/Petra, Amman etc.Ideally I would love to hear from women who live there or have travelled there. Thank you!

Attitude Towards Women Being highly gregarious as a nation, Jordanians will be surprised that you want to travel alone. Men, who have little or no contact with women, let alone sex, before marriage, may misinterpret this as an invitation to provide company.

However, I can tell you that Jordan is a safe country and a safe place to travel to. There is security everywhere, they have a large, powerful, alert army and there have been no attacks in Jordan. Don’t let the media storm that often surrounds this part of the world convince you that it is all bad and that the people despise Western people and our way of life.

Though you may see some women swimming in a burqini (full body suit), it is acceptable to wear a two-piece bikini and a majority of the women were doing so during my Jordan travel. Swimsuits are fine while swimming (or floating) at the beach, but don’t be walking through your hotel or on the streets wearing a hot pink string bikini.

Consular support is limited in the border areas of Jordan where the FCDO advise against all but essential travel, as set out above.
