We have been going twice a year for almost twenty years now, and haven't seen much change in the way of tourist safety. I would hazard to guess that you are safer there than in Minneapolis on a Friday night downtown.
Just return from Ixtapa on Feb 25th. We spent time during the day and evening in Zihuatanejo always felt safe. Also went to Las Gatas and a 40 min taxi ride to Playa Barra de Potosi always felt welcomed and safe. We walked the main strip and back streets late at night in Ixtapa with no issues.
We just returned from a 9 day trip to Ixtapa / Zihu and I would say you have no reason to be concerned about traveling there. Our condo was a mile outside of Ixtapa and we walked to dinner each night and back at 10/11 pm and had no issues and felt just as safe as walking around here at home. Towns are very clean and the people are very friendly.
The reason why people choose Zihuatanejo rather than Ixtapa which is very close to it is that this place is not that urban, and allows you to see the bay under your own pace. Do not miss Playa La Ropa which is 1.5 kilometers away from the town, as well as Playa las Gatas which has beach bars and restaurants amid the palms behind.
